Almost 100% of external USB and thunderbolt HD are encased in plastic, some are a bit more complex, refer to online teardown instruction on your specific hard drive. If the computer can see and mount the drive, check the drive for errors.
I have a lot of important files on that drive. Now, it won't run, and Disk Utility says that the Partition Type is Microsoft Reserved. The drive should then be recognized by other devices when you connect it to them. If your external hard drive is more than 2TB it is probably formatted in GPT instead of standard MBR, which cannot be read by 32bit Operating Systems such as WIndows XP.
