I tend to keep the spacing 'squared' - the same distance for vertical and horizontal. For what it's worth I've gotten used to the Windows 7 UI now, and going back to the older ones seems odd. Instead, in Windows 8/Windows 8.1, you must modify the registry settings in order to get the job done. Update: Another thing that makes this annoyingly inconsistent is that Save/Open dialogs on certain programs /do/ have 1 pixel line spacing in Win 7.

If you have trouble, get a good free registry editor like Registrar Lite and search for 'WindowMetrics', all of them will come up. That is what is creating the additional spacing. I have wasted an extraordinay amount of time trying to find a solution to this problem. That means 2 or 3 columns of small icons.
When I found this thread my only conclusion is: go back to XP?
