I just created a partition on my external hard drive also and was wondering why I couldn't paste to it. Anyway, I saved most of my files on my seagate external hard drive before everything went down hill. Sadly Apple file sys is not supported by my TV and other usb readers. However since GPT only uses the sectors 1 to 33 there will be enough space to fit GPT in in both cases. I did it from Ubuntu on my VMware Fusion partition.
